This woodcut by French artist Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) reflects his characteristic focus on the human figure and reverence for classical beauty. Known primarily as a sculptor, Maillol’s work in woodcut demonstrates his skill in translating volume and form to two-dimensional mediums. Created c.1940, this work showcases a reclining female figure with a still life of pumpkins below, subtly connecting themes of nature and the human form—a hallmark of Maillol’s work. This woodcut is presented in its original gilt frame.
